Contracting Doors Opening in Kansas

July 10, 2008

Executive Order 08-08: minority and women-owned businesses in the state of Kansas can now attain certification as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, thanks to a June 24, 2008 Executive Order issued by Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius. This is a very meaningful development, as minority and women-owned businesses have historically faced significant challenges in procuring state government contracts compared to their counterparts.

The Kansas Department of Commerce will lead this initiative by developing forms and procedures, building partnerships with women’s groups and minority groups and increasing awareness about procurement opportunities.

The Executive Order is great news on many fronts: allowing women and minority-owned businesses to more easily compete for state government contracts will foster their growth, resulting in new ideas, services and products for the Kansas economy. Further, it significantly increases opportunities for Asian American businesses in Kansas.

The AACEP wants to hear from you — what should the AACEP do to help Asian American businesses in Kansas?
